As soon as I arrived in Alabama this morning, I participated in a secure video link up conference call thingy with state and Federal officials. Here are the important parts:
[Redacted Agency] Southeast LA Secure Conference Call 0700:
National Weather Service:
Gustav sustained winds - 135mph
Moving Northwest @ 16mph
Track has shifted slightly more towards the city of New Orleans
Projected to gain strength and remain a Category 4 hurricane
Storm footprint approximately twice the size of Hurricane Katrina
Projected Storm Tides/Storm Surge:
20 feet @ Rigolets*
13 feet @ Southshore of Lake Pontchartrain
18 feet @ Northshore
12 feet @ Grand Isle
Major flooding is predicted at all locations, even those protected by newly installed levee system. In many ways Gustav is predicted to have a greater impact than Katrina.
Louisiana State Police:
Contraflow went into effect at 0400. Traffic is light to moderate in Baton Rouge. Interstate 10 East into southern Mississippi is closed. Interstate 59 North to Meridian is generally jammed. Numerous reports of breakdowns and flat tires. Scattered reports of gasoline shortages/outages.
Health and Hospitals:
C-130s will transport Special Needs Patients from JRB Belle Chasse, Thibodaux Regional, and Lakefront.
*20 feet @ Rigolets is where my house is, or more accurately, where my house will have once existed come Tuesday. Until I get done fighting with my insurance company, I’m going to be basically homeless and looking to spend a lot of time hanging out drinking with my friends. C’est la vie. C’est levee, motherfucker.
